Goals turn a report into a progress check. Set monthly targets for a client, and their report shows how close they are, adjusted to whatever dates you're looking at.
Add goals for a client
- Open Edit client. Click Edit in the client's report toolbar, or the edit icon on their dashboard card.
- Find the Goals card. It's marked optional and says the targets are monthly.
- Choose a metric. Pick one from the menu in the first row.
- Enter the target per month. Type a whole number in Target per month, for example 4800 clicks.
- Add more if you like. Click Add another goal for a new row. A client can have up to 6 goals. Click the X at the end of a row to remove it.
- Click Save changes. The Goals section now appears in the client's report.
Metrics you can set goals for
- Organic clicks: clicks from Google search (Search Console).
- Search impressions: how often the site appeared in Google results (Search Console).
- Keywords on page one: the same count as Keywords in top 10 in Key metrics (Search Console).
- Website sessions: all visits (GA4).
- Organic search sessions: visits from search engines (GA4).
- Key events (conversions): actions marked as key events in GA4.
Each metric can have one goal. A goal only shows when its source is connected and loaded, so a sessions goal stays out of the report while GA4 isn't connected.
How targets match the report's dates
Targets are per month, but reports can cover any dates. For totals that build up over time (clicks, impressions, sessions, organic sessions and key events), the target is scaled to the report's length. A 4,800 clicks per month goal becomes a target of about 4,416 on a 28-day report, and about 14,400 on a 3-month report.
When a target has been adjusted, the section heading says so (for example "adjusted to these 28 days") and each card shows the monthly figure, such as "4,800 per month". For a full calendar month, like Last month, the target stays as you entered it.
Keywords on page one is a count, not a total, so it's never scaled: 20 keywords on page one is the target for any length of report.
Read the Goals section
Each goal gets a card with:
- the result for the period and the target it's measured against, for example "4,611 of 4,416"
- a progress bar and the percentage of the goal
- a Reached badge once the target is met, or how many are still "to go"
With the client's positive-only setting switched on, the "to go" figure is left out. The section otherwise works like any other: you can hide it or move it with the switch and arrows next to its heading. See Show, hide and reorder sections.
Goals are a good match for monthly reports. Set the report to Last month before you share it, and the targets show exactly as you agreed them with the client. See Change dates and comparisons.
Changing goals later updates the live report and new shared reports. Reports you shared before keep the goals and progress they had. See Share a report.
